Radiant, glowing skin has a few foes on the horizon. Namely, summer heat, humidity, and sweat, plus the face coverings that are still recommended by the CDC in certain situations. The key to keeping skin fresh, says L.A.-based celebrity makeup artist Carissa Ferreri, is light layers and the proper skincare. “It’s all about playing up skincare in your makeup products, letting products set into your skin before going in for another layer, and working with a Beautyblender to seamlessly create a blurred effect,” she says. It’s a secret worth heeding: Ferrari has a reputation in Hollywood for skin that glows without the telltale signs of makeup, which has garnered her a client list that includes Gina Rodriguez, Suki Waterhouse, and Annette Benning. We tapped the artist for her tips, tricks, and favorite products for glowing summer skin that lasts, ahead.
“I’ve been painting a lot recently and I’ve found what lasts the best is priming the object first and then going in with light and minimal layers,” Ferreri explains. “Your skin is similar, so start with a blurring primer such as Dr. Jart’s that mattifies the skin slightly and then using your tinted moisturizers, CC creams, or concealer to really settle into the skin. If needed, set with a setting spray at the end.”
“The less product your skin has in the morning before you apply your makeup, the better your skin will look and feel,” Ferrer says, noting that rich creams (even eye creams) and oils are best suited for evening. “For combination or oily skin types, skip your moisturizer and instead go from your toner to a hybrid product such as your tinted serum or tinted moisturiser with SPF. Drier and sensitive skin types may want a moisturizer, but enhance this with a tinted serum or CC cream. I love the Ilia Beauty Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 30 and Erborian’s CC Cream.”
“I love using theJ ames Read H2O Tan Drops that you can put in your moisturizer, foundation, tinted moisturiser, or SPF,” Ferrer says. “You will get the color that you would from a foundation or bronzer without having to wear any makeup and it doesn’t transfer at all. Tan drops are also great for contouring. I’ll take a bronzing brush or a brush that’s tapered and mix a few drops with my SPF and contour with it. Once you take your mask off when you’re out and about you will look polished or as if you’ve just got back from vacation.”
“Take a tinted lip balm and blot it as either blush or highlight on the cheeks,” Ferrer says. “It’s just the lightest hints of color but you will get that radiant glow. Because it’s a hint of color, under the mask it won’t shift or move like your more traditional highlight and blush products may.”
To look naturally contoured, “go from the center third of the face and blend outwards,”Ferrersays. “With discoloration and redness, we often need more coverage in the center as opposed to the outer perimeters. Then just spot conceal any blemishes or spots you want covered. We often think we need more coverage than we do but in reality, it’s the complete opposite.”
